Review: The Ranger Regulated Box Mod
Raffmods, a super lovely husband and wife duo based in the Bay Area, California, crafts a regulated vape mod that we recommend for people who have recently made the switch from smoking to vaping— those who have outgrown their starter kits and are looking to further explore the world of vaping and all it has to offer. The Ranger is a great choice for novice to intermediate vapers looking to increase the customization of their vaping experience without becoming overwhelmed by too many power settings. Plus, this piece offers some impressive built-in safety features, which we’ll outline below.
With its dual-battery design, the Ranger does deliver more power than both the simplest electronic cigarette starter kits and tube vape mods. The Ranger is a regulated box mod, meaning it features over-current and over-voltage protection. As Mike Rafferty, the builder and designer of the Ranger, states “the regulator is based on an OKR T/10-W12-C chip, but utilizes a custom-engineered PCB that houses all of the additional components” so that users can “overdrive the OKR at over 80W on a daily basis without a problem.”
The Ranger features a potentiometer that enables variable voltage, meaning you can customize the amount of voltage (which affects the level of heat) delivered to your coil, though it does not take into consideration the resistance of your coil. Variable voltage devices exist so you can fine-tune your vaping experience; we actually enjoy the experiential aspect of VV devices, where you can really feel into what you enjoy, with different tanks/RDAs or e-juices, and adjust accordingly. An LED screen in the interior of the box displays both battery voltage and output voltage for easy reading—but it’s on you to remember your favorite settings! The Ranger also features reverse polarity protection, so you won’t have any expensive and potentially dangerous battery accidents— this is an important, basic safety feature that we believe every device should feature.
High Quality Materials
We appreciate that the box (Hammond 1590G enclosure) is powder-coated, which is a non-conductive protective finish for reasons of both safety and efficiency of power. From an aesthetic perspective, this offers protection against chipping, ensuring that your mod is immune to the normal wear and tear of frequent use. Of course, we must add that that this type of finish is said to be more eco-friendly than liquid finishes, which contain pollutants known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
Meanwhile, all of the internal components of the box mod are treated with conformal coating for protection from any liquids—including e-juice—as well as environmental contaminants. We love that Mel, the other half of the Raffmods team, admitted she dropped her Ranger into the bathtub, after which she immediately and carefully removed the batteries before letting her device air-dry. We believe her when she says that thanks to the conformal coating, her Ranger is still perfectly functional!
Our Ranger Set-up
We tested out the Ranger with 2 Samsung 18650 batteries and Melon + Tea 3mg nicotine certified organic e-liquid from the Vape Organics line. As our e-liquids do not require high heat to reach full flavor, we tested the Ranger at 5V with a 1.2 ohm coil build on the eVOlve RDA, with good results. Vapor production was great, in part because our liquids are 100% VG. All in all, we say this box mod works well with all-natural vape juice.
The Raffmods team also offers custom engraving, as you can see in our customized Ranger x Vape Organics box mod. Since they have their own laser engraver, and are customer service-oriented, they happily work with their customers to create unique and amazing designs. The Ranger comes in black, dark blue, Tiffany blue, red, green, white and has different LED button and screen color choices… but Mel also told me they are happy to order any other color a customer requests.
Though the price, at $150, is a little on the steep side, we are reminded of the many built-in safety features, high-quality materials utilized, and the fact that it is designed and assembled by a small and dedicated team in the USA. It’s worth noting that many variable wattage devices in the same price range, which do take into account the resistance of the coil and therefore do the “thinking” for you, have had issues with accuracy and don’t necessarily deliver the power settings they display. The Ranger Regulated Box Mod is available for purchase through Illumn.
